Station 56

Fire
Station 56 serves the north Malibu coast from a leased site at Camp
Joan Meier on Yerba Buena Road. Initially this station was
staffed by a single firefighter around the clock. Many fire stories abound about
duty at Fire Station 56. The station is a two-bedroom apartment with a downstairs garage. In addition a shed was built in the early 1990’s to accommodate
larger engines. The Malibu Fire Station is staffed daily by three firefighters and houses a 1999 Luverne Pumper (Engine 56) and a 1999 4WD brush patrol (Patrol 56). The Luverne pumper is based on a commercial chassis (Freightliner)
and is part of a three-engine study. This study will decide whether
the commercial chassis, which is significantly cheaper, can replace
the custom chassis found on our other fire trucks. Also, the size of the pumper
is being studied to determine if it will work better in the confining
environment of rural settings such as Malibu. At this time a new Fire Station 56 is under development closer to the Pacific Coast Highway.
