Station 53
304 Second St.
Port Hueneme, CA 93041 |
Fire Station 53 serves the city of Port Hueneme and the Port Hueneme Harbor. Through mutual-aid agreements, they often respond with the Oxnard and Ventura County Federal Fire Departments. Built in 1948, Station 53 was a combination of an engine room with small living quarters and a house. Another house on site was sold and is occupied as a private residence. These houses were used in the early years as homes for the captains and firefighters and their families. Many a quiet day off at "home" was spoiled by the siren that sat upon the roof and was used to notify volunteers of a fire.
In 2001, the old station was demolished and replaced with a modern station that accommodates larger apparatus and privacy needs. Personnel at Station 53 are trained and equipped for ocean rescue, staff the local Coast Guard cutter for EMS and staff the Ventura County Fire Boat (Operated by Lifeguards in Channel Islands Harbor) for firefighting. This station is staffed daily by three firefighters and houses a pumper (Engine 53); a reserve engine (Engine 153); a 15 passenger van (Utility 153); and a utility pickup (Utility 53) that is used in beach rescue work. |
