Adventures In Safety - Clown Program

This program targets 1st - 3rd grade students. Clowns, music, magic, and comedy captivate children as well as teachers while basic lessons in Fire and Life Safety are taught. Messages such as Stop, drop, and roll, crawl low under smoke, know two ways out, matches and lighters are tools, not toys help teach children to be safe.

Arson Watch Program

Ventura County is within a wildland/urban interface area, where brush grows next to homes. The Arson Watch Program is a proactive concept designed to increase awareness and to reduce property loss due to arson crimes in the community. This program allows the community to be involved by making them aware of fire conditions, taking preventative steps to protect property, and to report and record suspicious activities. The ravages of arson are a very serious problem. Everyone should be aware of the dangers that arson represents, and take action to protect themselves, families, and property from this devastating crime.

Child Passenger Safety

Members of our department are trained and certified through (NHTSA) National Highway Transportation Safety Association as a Car Seat Safety Technician. The purpose of this program is to educate parents on proper use and installation of child safety seats. We provide car seat inspections, installation guidance, product recall checks, and informative literature through our office. We may also co-sponsor checkpoint events.

Community Events - Booth/Exhibits/Displays

The Ventura County Fire Department is happy to provide personnel and equipment to community events, such as fairs, festivals, parades and public displays. Inside or outside our department personnel can assemble and staff a community education information booth (10' X 10') equipped with safety literature, displays, handouts as well as answer questions regarding home fire safety. This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to meet their local firefighters as well as gain valuable life safety information.

Fire & Life Safety for Senior Citizens

Through a speaker presentation, this program is designed to train senior citizens how to recognize and eliminate safety hazards as well as what do in an emergency. The Departments goal is to prevent injuries and deaths to seniors caused by fires and falls.

Fire Extinguisher Training

The objective of this class is to educate employees on how to properly operate and identify the correct fire extinguisher in the work place. This class will also teach you how to react in case of a fire. This training program will inform employees on topics such as elements of combustion, classes of fire, types of extinguishers, basic operation, identify hazards in the work place, extinguisher inspection and procedures to ensure proper working order.

Fire Safety House

The Fire Safety House is a mobile trailer, equipped with a living room, kitchen, and bedrooms to allow a realistic setting to teach fire and home. The house is equipped with doors that heat up, and a smoke simulator. Some of the topics reviewed are to call 9-1-1 in an emergency, two ways out, electrical safety, hazardous chemicals, as well as microwave, candle, and fireplace safety.

Get Fired Up For Reading

This program, held during Fire Prevention Week is designed to promote reading among children. A competition in participating schools is held to see who can read the most minutes at home. The grand prize of a station tour and books read to students by firefighters is awarded to the winners.

Junior Fire Academy

Young adults 14 -16 years old, learn about the fire department first hand from members of our fire department. They learn about careers in the fire department, first aid/CPR, ladders, fire extinguishers, fire engines, extrication and home fire safety as well as station tours, and rescue demonstrations. This program will have a positive effect on the whole community. The common goals and objectives are to teach the youth about values, personal integrity, compassion, and most of all teamwork.

Public Demonstrations

There is a wide range of apparatus demonstrations offered for the public. The public will be introduced the many types of equipment and apparatus used in today's firefighting. This is also a wonderful opportunity for the public to meet their local firefighters. We can be seen at local community events, health and safety fairs, festivals, schools, and camps.

Puppet Program - "Firefighter Frank and Friends"

This program targets children in preschool and kindergarten. Puppets and their friends teach young children how to stay low and crawl low under smoke, stop-drop-and roll if their clothes catch on fire, matches and lighters are tools not toys, and about home smoke detectors.
This program is designed to reduce death and injury due to smoke and fire by offering smoke detectors free of charge to citizens who do not have or cannot afford them. If assistance is needed, fire department personnel will help with the installation of the smoke detectors.

Speakers Bureau

The Office of Community Education will send a staff member to provide information and awareness to community groups on disaster preparedness, home fire safety and fire prevention.
Topics may include earthquake preparedness, holiday safety, water safety, and home inspections. You can also request speakers on Careers, EMS, and other fire department related topics through our office.

Fire Station Tours

The Ventura County Fire Department conducts Fire Station Tours on request. There are various firefighting apparatus and equipment to view as well. Please call the Office of Community Education for the nearest Fire Stations phone number or any Fire Station you prefer. Have details available such as date, time, age and number of guest, and any special request.

Volunteers in Prevention "VIPS"

This program serves as a vehicle for the public to assist the Fire District by volunteering their time to serve in a non-emergency capacity. VIPs can help teach fire safety programs to schools, staff the fire safety house, assist on emergencies, teach fire safety to seniors, provide technical support and office assistance. Click here to become a Volunteer.

"WATCH" Water Awareness Training for Children in the Home
